Project Zomboid Hunting and Tracking in Build 42

Turn wilderness protein into a long-term food source with animals, tracking, and butchery.

Hunting and Tracking

Build 42 transformed animals from ambient decoration into a survival system. Deer, rabbits, pigs, and rats now spawn in Knox County’s forests and fields, leave tracks you can follow, and yield meat, hides, and materials that make hunting worth the ammunition. This guide covers animal behavior, reading tracks and droppings, weapon selection, and butchery so you can build a sustainable hunting loop after town shelves empty.

Hunting pairs with Trapping for passive protein, Fishing for water-based calories, and Food Preservation for storage. Before you spend bullets on a deer, read the aiming and reload mechanics in Aiming and Reloading.

What animals exist in Build 42

The animal roster includes both domestic and wild species:

  • Deer — large herbivore, high meat yield, spawns in forest clearings and rural fields. Alert and fast; hears you before you see it.
  • Rabbits — small, fast, found near hedgerows and overgrown lots. Low yield per kill but renewable if you manage pressure.
  • Pigs — medium size, found around farms and rural areas. Good meat and fat yields; can be cornered more easily than deer.
  • Chickens — small birds near farms, low meat yield, but eggs provide passive food if you capture and pen them.
  • Sheep and cows — large livestock near farmsteads, massive yields but loud and dangerous to approach in zombie-heavy areas.
  • Rats — small vermin everywhere, negligible meat but available when nothing else moves.
  • Raccoons — Spiffo’s cousins, found at night near trash and camps. Low yield.

Finding animals

Animals spawn in sub-biomes within Knox County’s expanded map. Forests, fields, and rural roads are where to look:

  1. Listen first — birdsong and rustling in grass are audio cues. Noise frightens most animals away.
  2. Watch movement — deer especially stand out against open fields. Use binoculars or a scope before closing distance.
  3. Track prints and droppings — fresh tracks mean recent passage. Heavier traffic areas are worth returning to.
  4. Check spawn timers — animals respawn on a timer. Clearing an area completely means waiting for new spawns.

The Biomes Guide covers where each sub-biome appears on the new doubled map.

Tracking mechanics

Build 42 introduced trackable wildlife:

  • Paw prints appear in mud, snow, and soft ground near water sources and feeding areas
  • Droppings indicate recent passage and can guide you to watering spots
  • Freshness matters — newer tracks are darker and more defined; old tracks fade

Tracking works alongside the new animal AI that makes wildlife feel less predictable than B41.

Weapons and ammunition

The right tool matters for each animal class:

Deer, pigsHunting rifle or shotgunRifle ammo / buckshotOne clean shot to the head or chest
Rabbits, ratsShotgun with birdshot, or catapultBirdshot / stonesWounding risks losing the carcass
ChickensBirdshot onlyBirdshotOverpenetration wastes meat
Cows, sheepHunting rifleRifle ammoHeavy hides; loud deaths attract zombies

The Firearms page covers ammo types and gun stats. For silent kills, see Stealth and Noise.

Aiming and shot placement

Head shots deal instant kills. Chest shots work on larger animals but may wound rather than kill outright. Using a scope or binoculars before aiming reduces panic and improves accuracy:

  1. Spot animal from distance using optics
  2. Wait for it to settle (stop moving)
  3. Aim carefully, account for movement
  4. Fire when steady — panic affects accuracy
  5. Track wounded animals if they flee

The Aiming and Reloading page explains the new Build 42 aiming system in detail.

Butchering and yields

Each animal type yields different amounts:

  • Deer — roughly 12-16 units of meat plus hide for leather crafting
  • Pig — 8-12 units of meat plus fat for cooking and crafting
  • Rabbit — 2-4 units of meat, small hide
  • Chicken — 1-2 units of meat plus feathers
  • Cow/sheep — 20+ units of meat, large hide, bones for tools

Use a butcher knife or meat cleaver for faster processing. The Butchering skill reduces spoilage and improves yields. Pair with Cooking for calorie-efficient preparation.

Managing hunting pressure

Overhunting an area empties it until spawn timers reset. Rotate between zones:

  • Mark two or three forest areas on your map
  • Hunt each on a rotation, returning every few in-game days
  • Combine trapping as a passive supplement between hunts
  • Protect key zones from other survivors in multiplayer

Multiplayer hunting etiquette

Hunting zones are a shared resource in co-op. Agree on rules:

  • Which areas are designated hunting grounds
  • Who handles butchery and food distribution
  • How to handle a deer that draws a zombie horde
  • Trapping — build snares for passive catches while hunting
  • Fishing — diversify protein sources
  • Food Preservation — dry, smoke, or store meat before it spoils
  • Animal Care — penning chickens or rabbits provides renewable food
  • Cooking — maximize calories from hunted meat

Early Access notes

Animal spawn rates and AI behavior continue receiving tweaks through the 2026 support update. Test hunting routes after hotfixes to confirm zones are still active. Tracking visibility may improve in future patches alongside the AnimZed work later in 2026.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Where do deer spawn in Build 42?

Deer appear in forest clearings, rural fields, and near water sources in the expanded Knox County map. Use binoculars to spot them before closing distance.

What weapon is best for hunting rabbits?

Shotgun with birdshot or a catapult with stones. Rifles overpenetrate and waste ammunition on low-yield targets.

How do I track animals?

Look for paw prints in mud and snow, plus droppings near feeding and watering areas. Fresh tracks are darker and more defined.

Can I pen wild animals for food?

Chickens and rabbits can be captured and penned. See Animal Care for pen construction and feeding.

What does a deer yield in Build 42?

Roughly 12-16 units of meat plus a hide for leather crafting. Use a butcher knife and the butchering skill for better yields.

Do animals respawn after I clear an area?

Yes, on a timer. Overhunting empties zones until spawn cycles reset. Rotate between hunting grounds to maintain protein supply.
